Night light

Night Light emerged gradually in response to life in Melbourne's inner city, following a move from the coast. The concept formed from the contrast between familiar natural forms and the industrial textures encountered on daily walks through Collingwood, combining references to marine organisms with the shapes and materials of discarded urban objects. Its structure is built entirely by hand using wire, raffia, recycled stocking fabric and beads, materials chosen for their accessibility, tactility and the way they shift in character when illuminated. This process gives the piece an organic, almost creature-like quality that sits between the natural and the man-made. The name reflects how the object behaves: quiet and ambiguous by day, it reveals its full presence once switched on, as the glow activates its layered fabric and internal structure to give a sense of life visible only in darkness. Night Light was featured in the 2025 Melbourne Desing Week 100 Lights Exhibition.
